There’s always a rush around 2am. Thats when the bars close. So all kinds of people stumble in for a patty melt or a pile of hashbrowns. And it really is all kinds. Gaggles of girls who giggle and fall down in the bathroom. They’re fun. They tip well. Guys sort of down on their luck who seem to be holding their liquor too well. They’re very apologetic about being there. Couples. Usually gross. Singles. Usually sad. And her. She’s as tall as an amazon and broader than a barn. She wears a tight black t-shirt and black jeans, steel toed boots, and a thumb ring. Her greasy hair is slicked back in one of those styles you see in old movies. She’s stone cold sober. I’ve always assumed she was a bouncer though she’s never said so. She never said anything at all. She just have me with a simple:
“How’s your night going, love?” It took me months to work up the courage to say the comeback that had been on the tip of my tongue since I saw her.
“Better for seeing you, sugar. What’ll it be?” When I finally said she burst out laughing. She had a vulgar, snorting sort of laugh that made her whole body jiggle. It was heavenly. I never stopped saying it afterwards and she never stopped laughing. She doesn’t have a usual order, just a usual seat the counter. Right up front by the coffee machine and the cash register. Her dark brown eyes follow me when I’m there but she doesn’t stare. I keep her coffee filled. I look forward to seeing her every night. Working an all night diner is hellish, there’s no doubt about that. But that kind of women has everything going for her. And she’s everything I want to be.
